Our story
When you shop at Magic Rugs, you’re shopping with us! This is a family business, and we operate the entire store ourselves.
We met by happenstance when Alyssa was a tourist in Dubai and a customer of Mahmoud’s. We bonded over our love for weaving and fiber, and eventually Alyssa moved to Dubai.
Fast forward - we grew our family, moved to Turkey, and then settled in Houston, Texas. Thank you for supporting us and helping us follow our dreams!
Our philosophy
We believe that handmade work is special. We have a passion for preserving the art of weaving and for the cultural history of handiwork - and for teaching people about it.
We believe in shopping ethically. All our products are made by us, our family, or families we personally know. We believe in fair trade and fair wages, and that is reflected in our items.
Our work
Mahmoud and Alyssa are both weavers and master craftspeople. Mahmoud comes from a long line of weaving. His family has been weaving in Aleppo, Syria for hundreds of years. His last name is even an old weaving term!
We make items ourselves, and we also employ our family in Syria to make small rugs and pillow covers for us. We are happy to be able to support them, especially as their situation remains precarious after the devastation of the Syrian Civil War.
Mahmoud’s father, Abdulkader, weaving on his traditional Syrian loom. He learned to weave from his father, and he passed on the art to Mahmoud.
